pink tilt

Video // Germany 2011 // 09’07″

The video concentrates in only one tilt-up in extreme slow motion showing the tense body of three little ballerinas rehearsing a “pliet” in ballet class. The combination of color, audio and the extreme slowness of the camera movement show us the extraordinary effort of the ballerinas trying to master their dance positions, but also give us a disturbing feeling of been “scanning” the movement of the girls. Our position as pasive expectators changes radically as soon as we get uncomfortable with the power relations between gaze and picture.

PINK TILT was shot at the historical Vaganova Academy of St. Petersburg as part of the film and dance performance “Dancers” by M&Company in cooperation with the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum.
